Departures
Departs every Thursday
Socotra sits alone in the Arabian Sea, 380 km off Yemen: a UNESCO World Heritage island with trees that grow nowhere else on earth.
Eight days move between the dragon's blood forests of Dixam, the white dunes of Arher falling straight into the sea, Detwah lagoon and the caves of the south coast.
Highlights
- Dragon's blood forests at Dixam, photographed at sunrise and again under the Milky Way
- Arher, where a 300 m dune drops into the Arabian Sea
- Detwah lagoon: sandbar, reflections and the bottle trees on the ridge above
- The white canyon of Kalysan and the caves of Degub
- Snorkelling the Di Hamri marine reserve, flying-fish and dolphin offshore
- Our own camp team, Starlink on the island, and only ten seats per departure
Itinerary
Day 01
Arher Dunes · Snorkelling · Ras Erissel
We meet you at Socotra airport and drive to Arher, where towering dunes rise straight from the shoreline — desert and sea meeting in one breathtaking panorama. Sunset location chosen according to our timing. Overnight at Arher beach camp (private single tent).
Day 02
Arher Dunes · Snorkelling · Homhil Reserve
We climb to the crest of the Arher dune for an unforgettable sunrise — golden sand against the deep blue sea in the soft early light. Watch for spinner dolphins passing the coast over breakfast. After lunch we explore the Di Hamri marine reserve, with its rich fish life and colourful coral, ideal for snorkelling or scuba. In the afternoon, Homhil: hillsides of dragon's blood trees, desert roses and frankincense, a cliff-top natural pool and sculpted rock textures along the wadi — bring your swimwear. We shoot a magnificent sunset before overnight at Homhil camp (private single tent).
Day 03
Kalysan Canyon · Degub Cave · Zahek Dunes
After another sunrise we head for the famous Kalysan canyon — pure white rock and turquoise water that begs you to jump in. In the afternoon we continue to the island's south coast for its beaches and blue sea, then Degub cave, looking down over scattered traditional villages; inside, stalactites, stalagmites and pools seeped into the rock over the ages. We end the day among the great dunes of Zahek, lost in a grand sunset. South coast camp (private single tent).
Day 04–05
Dragon's Blood Forest · Dixam Plateau
Dixam is the homeland of the dragon's blood tree, and we have two days here, including the famous Fermihin forest — layer upon layer of umbrella canopies, a sight to behold. We walk this alien forest hunting compositions beneath the crowns, chasing the breath of an ancient wilderness. After dark, a memorable night shoot: surreal silhouettes of people and dragon's blood trees against moonlight, the Milky Way or star trails. Dragon's blood camp and Dixam camp (private single tent).
Day 06
Dixam Plateau · Detwah Lagoon
After sunrise in the dragon's blood forest we drive to the island's most famous sight — Detwah lagoon. At high tide, white sand meets turquoise water; at low tide, stunning reflections. You can climb the ridge beside the lagoon to find the lonely bottle trees and watch a magnificent sunset over the water. Your tent stands at our private lagoon camp, with shared toilets and showers (private single tent).
Day 07
Dolphin Bay · Shu'ab Beach · Qalansiyah
Sunrise at Detwah is equally breathtaking — a morning walk on sand of unmatched beauty. After breakfast we take a boat to Shuab, the 'golden beach', passing impressive sea cliffs, with a good chance of meeting playful spinner dolphins again. Shuab is perfect for a slow morning of swimming and scenery. We return by boat to our private camp by the blue lagoon for lunch, then drive back to the capital Hadibo to visit the local market and pick up souvenirs. Local guesthouse in Hadibo (twin room).
