In the far west of Central Asia lies Mangystau, a land time forgot, where nature and myth intertwine. Every inch of it is inscribed with hundreds of millions of years of the earth's memory, its landforms like nature's most unbridled painting. Most marvellous of all is the mysterious Valley of Stone Spheres — boulders of every size like fallen stars lying silently across the vast steppe, their origin still a puzzle to geologists. To walk among them is to tread on echoes of deep time, as if crossing into the dawn of the universe.

Tiramisu — a name full of sweet temptation — is in truth a canyon country of geological wonder: sheer strata and brilliant colours that change with every ray of light, from the tenderness of dawn to the splendour of dusk, all telling of nature's masterful hand. Bozzhyra is another epic canvas: colossal natural monoliths standing proud and alone in the silent wilderness — a fantastical land uplifted from the ancient Tethys, where the rocks seem to whisper history, and every visitor feels a serenity and grandeur beyond the worldly.

In Mangystau every landscape is a poem and every wind carries an ancient song — wandering the fantasy of the stone spheres, hunting colourful secrets in the Tiramisu canyon, or remembering ages past in the shadow of the Valley of Castles. This land can cleanse and move your spirit as nowhere else.

Itinerary

Day 01

2027.4.28

Arrival day · Aktau, Kazakhstan

Fly to Aktau in western Kazakhstan. Airport pick-up and hotel check-in, a look around the city, sunset on the Caspian shore and a first taste of the local cuisine. Today's real task is rest — adjust to the time zone and gather strength for the days ahead.

Day 02

2027.4.29

To the Tiramisu Valley

After breakfast we set out for the Lacy canyon, a slot landscape rivalling America's Antelope Canyon. En route the convoy stops at a pink salt lake, then lunch in a small town. In the afternoon we step into the Tiramisu valley — a wilderness of multi-coloured, layered clay hills that evokes Arizona's Wave and Peru's rainbow mountain, celebrated as the jewel of Mangystau and sheer paradise for drone photography. At sunset the valley puts on a feast of light, and we are there to record it.

Day 03–04

2027.4.30-5.01

Tiramisu Valley → Bokty → the Bozzhyra Ridge

After breakfast we head for one of Kazakhstan's signature landscapes, the scene engraved on the 1,000-tenge banknote: 165 m Mount Bokty, its bands grading from white and yellow into pink and rust-brown, shaped like a great overturned ship — a wonder centuries in the carving. Beneath it a vast dry salt flat reveals this land's past as an ancient seabed, with fossils and primordial traces waiting to be found. In the afternoon we reach Bozzhyra and walk the dragon's-back ridge, its serrated crest often swept by exhilarating wind — stand on the viewpoint and let it blow. We camp at the very top of Mangystau, ringed by world-class scenery, wait out a glorious sunset, and spend the night beneath the stars, dreaming of what lies beyond.

Stay: one night camping (private tent) + one night hotel (twin room, showers)

Day 05

2027.5.02

Summit of Bozzhyra Peak

Rested, we return to Bozzhyra. This afternoon the ascent of the Bozzhyra spire itself begins. From the summit the grandeur is overwhelming: a primordial seabed, folded and carved over hundreds of millions of years into this singular, matchless landscape. (One night camping.)

Day 06

2027.5.03

Valley of Castles

Sunrise on the Bozzhyra spires, breakfast, then on to the Valley of Castles and our local guesthouse. In the afternoon, the breathtaking valley itself: ancient relics woven into natural wonder, rock formations like a fairytale fortress awaiting our lenses. We hike through the valley while the drone scouts from above, choosing the ideal positions for sunset and the following dawn. As the sun drops, golden light fills the valley and the sunset shoot reaches its peak — capturing that most glorious skyline.

Stay: local guesthouse (twin room, hot showers in shared bathroom)

Day 07

2027.5.04

Valley of Castles → Chalk Canyon → Salt Lake

We greet first light in the Valley of Castles, locking in a moment of quiet beauty, then after breakfast set out for the most pristine white chalk canyon. Every step deep inside is a new scene — ancient fossils silently telling the ages. In the afternoon we lock in the best spots for sunset, night and dawn, carving time with light from golden glow to star river, missing none of nature's stirring moments. The day ends in comfort: a proper rest after the trail, a hot shower before a generous dinner — a small luxury that leaves you refreshed and ready for conversation and contemplation under the stars.

Day 08

2027.5.05

Salt Lake → Valley of Stone Spheres → Aktau

Sunrise over the salt lake, with ample time to create. Then the Valley of Stone Spheres, famous for its unique geology — hills strewn with giant round concretions, an unmatched playground for photographers. Evening back in Aktau and our hotel.

Stay: local 5-star hotel (twin room)

Day 09

2027.5.06

Almaty → Charyn Canyon → Khan Tengri sunset

In good time we fly to Almaty, then drive to the viewpoints over the Charyn canyon. In the evening we reach a remote high-mountain salt lake to photograph the golden sunset glow on Khan Tengri and the panorama of the range.

Day 10

2027.5.07

Full day among Tien Shan peaks & steppe

A dawn drone flight over the river's nine winding bends at sunrise. Then deep into the snowy gorges — great wildflower meadows along the way, and a paradise of peaks, grassland, flowers, streams, cattle and sheep composing one perfect frame after another. As first light pierces the mist, the summits are dyed a delicate rose, and the whole valley wakes in warm light. If luck holds, we photograph Kazakh horsemen galloping through the flower seas.

Day 11

2027.5.08

Departure · Almaty airport transfer

After a final morning shoot we return to Almaty and see you off at the airport — homebound with a head full of landscapes. You are also welcome to stay on two more days and experience the culture of Central Asia's largest city.
